Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS), Gamma Irradiated, can be used for biopharmaceutical processes like virus and vaccine production. The gamma irradiation involves the inactivation of contaminants through gentle irradiation. When FBS bottles are arranged in a pallet during gamma irradiation, high irradiation doses (58 kGy) are necessary to irradiate the centrally located bottles with the required dose (>30 kGy). The high irradiation dose and the associated higher temperatures may affect the serum quality.
Capricorn Scientific™ has established process parameters and controls for the maximum inactivation of contaminants by an innovative gamma irradiation process in small-sized boxes at 25 – 35 kGy. If the irradiation is performed in single boxes, the maximum irradiation dose is 38.7 kGy. This gentle irradiation is less likely to affect serum quality while maintaining the inactivation of contaminants.
FBS, also fetal calf serum (FCS), is the most frequently utilized supplement in cell culture media. It improves various cell culture applications through its high levels of embryonic growth-promoting factors, which are essential for successful cell culturing. Further, FBS contains various small molecules, such as amino acids, sugars, lipids, and hormones. FBS is the blood component obtained after coagulation and removal of cellular components.
This unique and comprehensive mix makes FBS one of the most essential supplements for supporting cell growth and proliferation for in vitro cell culture. The fetal bovine serum for cell culture supports most cell lines and undergoes strict quality controls. This product is collected in South America.
