Antibiotic/Antimycotic Solution can be added to cell culture media to prevent bacterial and fungal contaminations. This solution contains a combination of penicillin and streptomycin, which act against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, and amphotericin B, which works against yeast and multicellular fungi. The Antibiotic/Antimycotic Solution is provided as a convenient and ready-to-use 100x concentrate, with no need for solubilization.
This product is viable for tissue culture, bacteria media, and many other applications. This solution contains 10.000.000 units/L of penicillin, 10.000 mg/L of streptomycin, and 25 mg/L of Amphotericin B. Penicillin belongs to the β-lactam family and acts by inhibiting an essential enzyme for the synthesis of new membrane components (D-Alanin-Transpeptidase).
Penicillin is only effective on actively dividing cells. In contrast, streptomycin operates by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis in the bacterium, irrespective of its growth phase. Amphotericin B is a fungicide that binds with ergosterol in the fungal membrane, leading to the formation of pores. Through this process, the fungus starts leaking essential ions, ultimately resulting in cell death.
